Healthy Food Grand Rapids: Best 10 Healthy Restaurant

#1 Freshii

Freshii is my favorite healthy restaurant in Grand Rapids. If you are looking for healthy food in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I recommend Freshii.

When you go to Freshii, you order by telling them what kind of food you want (vegan/gluten-free/regular), and then they customize the meal. They even have a “fill up” option where you can get a whole meal for under $5!

They have that if you’re concerned about calories or fat content. I’m a vegetarian, so I used to get the tofu scramble, but now that I’m pregnant, I’m trying to cut back on extra calories and fat.

#2 Bliss & Vinegar

Bliss & Vinegar is a healthy restaurant in Grand Rapids with delicious healthy options. My doctor said it’s important to eat healthily during the pregnancy and nursing stages, and she recommended adding probiotics (good bacteria) to my diet.

So instead of getting pizza rolls at every meal, I go to Bliss & vinegar. They make 3 different types of wraps, and if you order one wrap, you get a side of salad (they have a ton of salads with tons of different toppings).

So I get a chicken Caesar wrap with lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Then they put garlic dressing on the chicken. It’s very yummy! They also have lots of desserts like cheesecake and chocolate cake.

I love their chocolate cake, but it’s not recommended for people who are lactose intolerant (like me). That’s unfortunate because it is so good!

Now that I’m pregnant and can’t have Mexican food anymore, this is my go-to place for good food!

#3 Making Thyme Kitchen

Making Thyme Kitchen is a small restaurant in Grand Rapids that has healthy options like salads. The first time I went here was with my parents when they were visiting me from Texas.

We started with the chicken and avocado wrap. The wrap came with lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, avocado, and a creamy spinach sauce. Before I knew it, I was eating my whole plate! Their salads are also very tasty (I went with the grilled chicken salad).

#4 Linear Restaurant

Linear Restaurant is a completely vegan restaurant in Grand Rapids that has tons of healthy options for lunch. My doctor recommended this one because it has probiotics in it. It’s located on Wealthy St near Library St, just north of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

The first time I went here, they made me an eggless egg dish which contained rice noodles topped with vegetables and a cashew cream sauce. I should have had it with soy milk since I’m lactose intolerant, but it was still yummy. Then they offered me an egg dish with tofu and mushrooms. It was very good. And then they brought me two desserts to try (the chocolate cheesecake & tiramisu).

The second time I went here, we ordered the vegan chicken wings & vegan cheesesteak sandwich. The cheesesteak was so good! They also have salads served in lettuce cups, and you can choose your dressing (they have like 40 different kinds of dressings). This restaurant is very close to my house, so I always get take-out. The staff is friendly too.

#5 Sip Organic Juice Bar

Sip Organic Juice Bar is a juice bar with lots of healthy options. You can get a juice that comes in a to-go cup or an icy cold smoothie. My favorite kind of juice is green juice because they blend kale, cucumber, and lemon in it. It’s very yummy, and you feel full afterward (maybe because it’s high in fiber). They put ginger in the orange juice, which tastes good too. They also have sandwiches, but I’ve never tried one there. I guess I haven’t gotten hungry enough yet.

#6 Lake Michigan Nutrition

Lake Michigan Nutrition is a restaurant with healthy options that are located near Fuller Rd & North Division Ave. It’s next to a warehouse, and before, it was an old tire store. Most of their menu items are made from fresh local ingredients, so they are very yummy!

On my first visit there, I got one of their salads with grilled chicken, avocados, tomatoes, and cucumbers on top. It was very tasty! They also have soups like tomato soup and a vegetarian chili which has beans mashed up in it (some people say the flavor is not vegan, but I don’t notice the difference). Their food is very filling, and you can get a full meal for under $10.

Then I went back a few days later. That day my friend got the vegetarian burger which came with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and onions on top of a toasted bun made with whole wheat flour. She had it with her choice of salad dressing (sugar-free ranch or sugar-free blue cheese). It was very yummy too!

Then we went to get dessert, and she ordered the “berry& oat” pie which had blueberries and rolled oats on top of a cherry cream topping. It tasted like dark chocolate cake!

#7 Mudpenny

Mudpenny is a vegetarian cafe near East Beltline Ave. & Knapp Dr. I went there with my friend, and when we walked in, I noticed that they had lots of food and also a bunch of live plants. They have sandwiches, soups, salads, baked goods (like cookies & muffins), fudge, pizza (made without cheese), wine, smoothies, beer, and coffee. Everything looks good, but the thing I got was the peanut butter & jelly on cinnamon toast. It tasted really good!

Then my friend got the soy-ginger roast which came with gravy. She loved it! And then she ordered a “bunny chow, ” an African dish (basically curry over rice). It was delicious too! The staff is really nice, and they let us sit there while we ate. They have lots of vegan desserts like lemon squares and chocolate cake.

#8 Saltwater Cafe & Sushi Bar

Saltwater Cafe & Sushi Bar is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant with a bunch of healthy options (they also have gluten-free items). I go there with my mom, brother, and their friends. I usually get the Mediterranean sandwich which has falafel (made with chickpeas) on it. It’s very filling! They make a vegan cake that tastes good for dessert, but it’s not too sweet because they use less sugar and agave nectar than regular cake.

Here is a picture of the inside of the restaurant. They have tables and booths inside, but we usually sit outside because it’s more peaceful.

They also have sushi and rolls (made without fish), but I don’t eat that because I don’t like raw fish. The staff is super friendly, and some of them speak multiple languages, including Spanish, so you can enjoy your meal while they’re helping you out with translations if you can’t read Japanese (like me).

#9 Fresh Thyme Cafe

This one is also in Grand Rapids and has been around for a long time (since the 80s?). It has lots of healthy food options, including wraps, salads, soups, and stews. The stews are like chilis, and the soups are usually tomato-based with beans.

They also have sushi, baked goods (like muffins), vegan desserts (like cookies), and coffee. I tried their raspberry soy strawberry smoothie once, and it was really good!

I also got a Greek salad once that came with lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, kalamata olives, feta cheese (vegan!), and a side of potato chips and hummus. The staff is friendly too.

#10 Earth Fare

Last but not least is the store called Earth Fare, which carries organic groceries, including produce, beverages, snacks, and more. I usually go there with my mom and do some grocery shopping too. They also have a cafe.

Earth Fare is a bit bigger than your average grocery store, but it’s very clean. You can find plant-based recipes and vegan frozen meals in the cooking aisle, where they also sell various spices and oils.

There is even a section of health stuff (weight management, herbs, vitamins, etc.), so you can pick up some supplements if you need them too. More supermarkets have a vegan section, but I haven’t been to them yet.
