Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • Zest of one orange
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the cold butter pieces to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the dried cranberries and orange zest.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix until just combined. Do not overmix; it’s okay if there are a few lumps.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick.
  • Use a knife to cut the dough into 8 wedges.
  • Place the wedges on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 15-18 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and cooked through.
  • While the scones are baking, make the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth.
  • Once the scones are done baking, let them cool for a few minutes, then drizzle the glaze over the top.
  • Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade cranberry orange scones!
