Ingredients

  • 1 cup of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of hot sauce Louisiana-style recommended for authenticity
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup apricot jam
  • 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes adjust for heat preference
  • A pinch of paprika for smoky flavor
  • A pinch of garlic powder
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the honey, hot sauce, apple cider vinegar, and apricot jam. Stir the mixture over low heat until the ingredients are well combined and the jam is fully incorporated.
  • Add Spices: Sprinkle in the crushed red pepper flakes, paprika, garlic powder, and salt. Stir well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed throughout the sauce.
  • Simmer: Continue to simmer the sauce over low heat for about 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will let the sauce to slightly thicken and allow the flavors to mingle. Be sure to keep the heat low to prevent the sauce from boiling and the honey from burning.
  • Taste And Adjust: Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If you prefer it spicier, you can add a bit more crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce. For a sweeter sauce, consider adding a touch more honey or apricot jam.
  • Cool Down: Remove the sauce from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. As it cools, the sauce will thicken further, achieving a consistency similar to the original Popeyes Sweet Heat Sauce.
  • Serve Or Store: Serve the sauce immediately with your favorite fried chicken, or sandwiches, or as a dipping sauce for appetizers. If storing, transfer the sauce to a clean, airtight container and refrigerate. It can be refrigerated for up to two weeks.
